Wakim offering a fresh start

The Dominion Post endorses state Delegate Chris Wakim, R-Ohio, for the 1st District seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.
This endorsement reflects a change of mindset since the 2004 election when we supported longtime Rep. Alan Mollohan, DW.Va.
While we recognize Mollohan’s more than two decades of public service and the wealth of appropriations he has steered to our state, we now have reservations about the congressman’s ethical standards.

First Congressional District candidate Chris Wakim is accusing Congressman Alan Mollohan of illegally coordinating with a 527 group... The Republican Wakim’s campaign announced Thursday it was filing a complaint with the Federal Election Commission, alleging Mollohan and his campaign have collaborated on anti-Wakim ads aired by West Virginia Values LLC.

WASHINGTON — For nearly a quarter of a century, Rep. Alan Mollohan largely has been absent from the national stage, content with winning elections and bringing home the bacon to his northern West Virginia district.
But this year, the Democratic congressman found himself a casualty of the partisan ethics fracas on Capitol Hill. He was forced to resign his post as ranking member of the House ethics committee, threatening — at least temporarily — his party's plans to make the “culture of corruption” a major campaign issue for next month's midterm elections.

Chris Wakim taught wife Jeannette to drive when both were teenagers growing up in Wheeling. Their relationship has lasted 33 years, including 24 years of marriage.
“This is proof of just how loyal and truthful I am — of how I value loyalty and I value truthfulness,” Wakim, 48, said. “What people want in their leaders is trust, accessibility and the ability to stand up for an issue.
